History of Bilateral Relations

The diplomatic relations between the USSR and Belize were established on June 25, 1991. Belize recognized the Russian Federation as a successor state to the USSR on August 14, 1992. There was no exchange of diplomatic missions, the Russian Embassy in Mexico representing the interests of our country in Belize.

Recently, a noticeable impetus has been given to the development of political dialogue between the two countries. On September 25, 2017, "on the sidelines" of the 72^nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the first meeting in the history of bilateral relations of Sergey Lavrov with the Minister of Foreign and Internal Affairs of Belize, Wilfred P. Elrington, was held, followed by the signing of the Protocol on Political Consultations between the two Foreign Ministries.

In August 2013, Alexander Torshin, First Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, paid a working visit to Belize.

July 11, 2012, saw the signature of the Agreement between the Federal Financial Monitoring Service of the Russian Federation and the Financial Intelligence Unit of Belize concerning Cooperation in the sphere of Counteracting Legalization (Laundering) of Proceeds from Crime, and Financing of Terrorism.

On September 25, 2018, on the sidelines of the 73^rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize, Wilfred P. Elrington, at the end of which the Treaty on Basic Relations between the Russian Federation and Belize was signed.

In 2020, the Ambassador of Belize with residence in Brussels became the first accredited diplomatic representative of Belize in Russia in the history of bilateral relations.

The Russian trade with Belize totaled 99.8 thousand US dollars in 2020.
